Magic Carpets in the Desert: Part 2

Day two of the shoot, and everyone is up early to make the most of the glorious desert light.

A bird looks on with a mocking eye as it takes 5 people to unload the enormous Damascus Grey.

The uninterrupted clear blue sky and sandy dunes have inspired the team, and they persevere deeper into the desert to create the final shot.

Before catching the plane home, a quick trip to the nearby bazaar to discover the local craftsmen and their wares.

Look out for the final shots in the Studio Collection brochure, out soon…

Magic Carpets in the Desert: Part 1

When the time came to find a shoot location for our new Studio Collection, Suzanne Sharp and the team were helplessly drawn back to the exotic roots of our beautiful rugs.

And so they journeyed to a distant desert for the shoot, allowing the bright colours, simple geometric patterns and soft textures of the rugs to shine against the modestly beautiful backdrop.

Exploring the location, a myriad of arched corridors, secret courtyards, quiet corners and shaded alcoves.

Creating a beautiful shot involves painstaking attention to detail and a lot of hard work.

New arrivals

New hand knotted rugs have arrived as part of our Studio Collection. Cable, Damascus, Rif and Square Chains are densely hand knotted rugs with bright and graphic designs, they are woven with a thicker thread and a larger knot to give a wonderfully chunky texture and deep pile.

The vibrant colours and clean designs translate beautifully into this denser quality, resulting in a transformative rug: it will introduce texture, warmth and colourful pattern to any interior.

In keeping with our ethos of making things by hand, these rugs are woven by artisans in Nepal using traditional techniques and Tibetan wool, which is chosen for its softness and durability.

Graphic, textural and colourful, these rugs are available from stock in a range of sizes and colours. All rugs are Price Band 1.

Good things come to those who wait

Some spaces require something particularly special and we often work with clients to create their own original rug commissions. The possibilities are infinite.

This bespoke Houndstooth rug was designed by Emily Todhunter, commissioned by a client living in Switzerland. The rug reflects Todhunter’s ability to create classic designs with a contemporary aesthetic; the houndstooth motif has been reworked into a fresh and contemporary style.

New arrivals

Beautiful Turkish Ikat cushions have just arrived exclusively at our London shops.

The Ikat technique for making patterned cloth is one of the earliest known. As textiles rarely survive for more than a few hundred years it is difficult to be precise, but examples are known from pre-Columbian Latin America, and famous centres of Ikat production stretch from the Ottoman Empire through Central Asia to Indonesia.

Using a tie-dye method the threads are hand-dyed in stripes of colour. When these threads are woven into a fabric the stripes of colour form patterns with the distinctive blurred geometry that is synonymous with Ikat cloth.

Our Ikat cushions are made of silk that is produced in the traditional way, by hand-winding the cocoons of the silk moth and spinning the fibres into yarn. Each piece is individual and subtly different from the next, and we have a wide range of patterns and colours.

Knights and crosses

For our Maltese showroom, we have created a bespoke hand-knotted rug using the eight-pointed cross of the Knights of St John. It was in the mid 16th century, when the Knights were based in Malta, that the familiar design now known as the “Maltese Cross” became associated with the island.

The eight points are said to symbolize the eight lands of origin of the Knights: Provence, Auvergne, France, Aragon, Castile, Italy, England and Germany.

The pleasing symmetry of the cross makes it a striking decorative motif.

Chain Reaction

Champion of witty British fashion, Giles Deacon is loved for his bold prints and sophisticated, pop culture references.

These hand-drawn sketches show his inspiration for the ‘Sentinel’, ‘Lavaliere’ and ‘Libertine’ rug designs. With an unusual metal theme, the designs exemplify Giles’ subversive style and mastery of elegant quirkiness.

Woven entirely by hand using fine wool and silk yarns, these rugs transform the harsh metallic motifs into soft, lustrous warmth.

“The inspiration behind the collection was to produce a range that embodies the Giles aesthetic of unexpected motifs made into beautiful statement objects. I loved the idea of playing with studs, chains and wire to make intricate repeats incorporating silk, wool and metallic thread. I love how the softness of the wool and silk yarns contrasts the harsh metal of the designs, and transforms them into something warm and alluring.” GILES DEACON

New Arrivals – Pomegranate and Ottoman Artichoke

Beautiful and classical, the new ‘Ottoman Artichoke’ and ‘Pomegranate’ rugs by The Rug Company evoke a traditional aesthetic which is complemented by warm and rich colour palettes.

The Pomegranate is a classic motif that appears on Suzani embroideries and rugs from central Asia. The Ottoman Artichoke design is based on patterns that were very popular for many types of weaving made in the Ottoman empire, which at the height of its power during the 16th Century controlled a huge territory in South East Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

Hand knotted in Afghanistan using very high quality wool, the colours are all vegetable-dyed and the yarn is hand spun and exceptionally lustrous.
