Renowned for its attention to quality, design and craftsmanship, The Rug Company has created a new collection of contemporary handmade Aubusson rugs. Originating hundreds of years ago in Aubusson, France, this very fine tapestry flat-weave technique has been celebrated for centuries for its astonishing intricacy. The traditionally elegant and flowing floral designs have typically adorned palatial houses and grand chateaux; however, the Aubusson has now been reinterpreted by The Rug Company into a contemporary aesthetic. The new Aubusson rugs faithfully retain the craftsmanship, fineness and strength of the traditional weave but celebrate the modern design spirit with the vision of leading contemporary designers. The inspiration for the ‘Moghul’ rug by Katrin Cargill came from a photograph of some old and crumbling columns in India. She says of the pattern, ‘The zig zag design is one of the most ancient forms of decoration, and has a timeless fascination for its trompe l’oeil effect, which has translated wonderfully into a modern flat weave rug. The ebullient border of ‘Meadow’ is inspired from an old family linen cloth, belonging to my grandmother in Switzerland; flowered and pretty yet crisp and functional. The stripe makes it practical and decorative.’ Neisha Crosland has created designs with a symmetry and flow that can be likened to the geometric constructions occurring within nature, which are enhanced by the delicate precision of Aubusson in ‘Razor’, ‘Pyramid Trellis’ and ‘Moorish Circles’. In keeping with The Rug Company’s ethos of combining traditional craftsmanship with forward thinking design, Crosland remarks, ‘whilst many of my sources are historical, my vision is entirely contemporary.’ |
